Wallowing the success of the princess castle bookcase, I quickly realized that with our third child due in February, it was high time to make Keaton a bookcase of his while I can. It’s too cold in the winter for painting and finishing, so with Sara’s blessing, I finalized the design and began gathering materials.
Here’s the idea:
Keaton loves…I mean LOVES rockets. We have a narrow but tall space in his room that just begs for something like a narrow bookcase. What better way to utilize the space, get some time in the shop and make my son’s day? Make a rocket bookcase! Modeled after the Saturn V of the Apollo Program, which Keaton calls the Jupiter XVI, the book case will feature 18″ wide (10″ deep) curved shelves and soar into the sky a full 6 feet. Yeah. I’m going bad-ass with this one.
To facilitate construction and final assembly, just like it’s namesake, the bookcase will be built in stages. The first stage is the biggest and will be about 35″ tall. The second stage is narrower and taller and will be about 37″ tall. I designed it with a simple plywood back that we can screw into studs in the wall to anchor it (unlike Kylie’s which has an anti-tip kit installed). The plywood back will be cut into shapes such that they lock together on assembly.
Once I got the “go for launch” from the flight director…lol…I purchased about $30 in plywood and pine boards.
Tomorrow: the construction begins!
